With its long, cold nights and hibernating airs, the winter season is pretty much tailor-made for movie marathons, especially when a blizzard is raging outside. Yes, the United States got a very snowy visit from Winter Storm Fern this weekend, with much of the country waking up to several feet of snow that no doubt put to rest any plans of venturing outside for the next few days.
Given that Mother Nature has all but forced us to take residence on our couches, it would seem foolish not to take advantage of the snow-in by watching some great on-theme Netflix movies. We here at Tom’s Guide have selected five streaming titles that thrive in the cold, from classic wintertime comedies to frost-bitten survival dramas.
‘Frankenstein’

Now nominated for nine Academy Awards — including for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Jacob Elordi — Guillermo del Toro’s icy take on the classic Mary Shelley sci-fi novel stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature (played by Elordi) to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to dangerous consequences for both the creator and his tragic creation.

The gothic drama — which also stars Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz — smartly uses the frigidness of its wintry setting to mirror the creature’s cold isolation and capture the haunting hostility of the source material.

‘Society of the Snow’

Braving the frosty elements is basically a subset of the survival drama genre, and that’s certainly true of this 2023 Spanish flick, which is a screen adaptation of Pablo Vierci’s 2008 book of the same name. It tells the true story of the 1972 Andes flight disaster, when a Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 chartered by a Uruguayan rugby football team and their supporters crashed into a glacier on their way to a game in Santiago, Chile.
Trapped in the remote Andes mountains at freezing elevation sans medical supplies, cold-weather clothing, shelter or even food, the surviving passengers then have to learn how to outlast the hostile environment and work together to see another day.

‘Groundhog Day’

Yes, day after day of chilling winds and icy roads may have you thinking that you’re living in your own private version of this 1993 Bill Murray classic. Directed by Murray’s old “Ghostbusters’ buddy Harold Ramis, the wintry rom-com sees the “Saturday Night Live” legend play Phil Connors, a cynical TV weatherman who mysteriously winds up reliving the same day over and over again as he’s on location in snowy Punxsutawney, PA, to report on their annual Groundhog Day.
“Groundhog Day” isn’t just a wintertime favorite but also one of the most beloved comedy films ever made, with its clever plot and endearing romance between Murray’s character and Andie MacDowell’s Rita Hanson.

Jeffrey Wright leads this 2018 neo-Western action thriller, which faithfully follows the plot of the William Giraldi novel it’s based on: The Oscar-nominated actor plays Russell Core, a retired naturalist who is sent back into the field to hunt down the wolves responsible for the disappearance of three small children in the remote Alaskan village of Keelut.
His task gets even more chilling, however, when he finds a local boy’s body, unraveling a terrifying search for truth about the children’s parents (played by Alexander Skarsgård and Riley Keough).

‘Wind River’

In this crime drama from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star as U.S. Wildlife Agent Cory Lambert and FBI Agent Jane Banner, respectively, who try to solve the murder of an 18-year-old indigenous woman on the Wind River Indian Reservation in wintry rural Wyoming. As the body count starts racking up, however, the investigators soon realize that their own lives are also in danger.
With a solid 87% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, the site’s critical consensus praises “Wind River” for luring viewers “into a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skillfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title.”
